50th Anniversary Initiatives

KitchenMercerSt.jpg

Taking the 50th anniversary of The Kitchen’s founding as a motivating milestone, we have launched a series of research projects focused on our organization’s history. These initiatives revisit and reanimate the materials held in The Kitchen’s archive and supplement these records with new oral histories and conversations among artists, curators, and other practitioners who have worked with the organization across the decades.

The archive of The Kitchen’s activities from 1971–1999 is in the collection of the Getty Research Institute. A digital selection of materials from 1971–present is accessible through The Kitchen’s Archive Website. Additional materials about The Kitchen’s early years are accessible on a website established by the founders of The Kitchen, Steina and Woody Vasulka. The image to the left is from the collection of the Vasulkas, and it shows audience members during intermission in The Kitchen’s original space within the Mercer Arts Center at 240 Mercer Street.

Conversations

This series of conversations brings together artists across generations to discuss their work and their perspectives on the organization’s evolving role in the cultural landscape.

Oral Histories

This series of oral histories records the experiences of individuals who have presented work at The Kitchen, served as staff members, or otherwise collaborated with the organization.

Research Residency

This residency invites artists to spend six months engaging with The Kitchen’s archive from 1971 through the present as material and inspiration for their ongoing work.
